Mamma Zu vs Capital Ale House 4-2 WIN!!!!

Boys,
We finally got a W. And I am not talking about an ex president either.
We came out storming with goals to take a 2-0 lead stunning a squad that beat us last season, and probably looked at our record and fatally underestimated us. They were like a hornets nest poked by a stick. We got another goal to take it to 3-0. The most goals we have scored all year.
We were thirsty for some soda after the game so we took it to half with the lead intact, even though we got a little soft. Complacency is a scourge every team deals with. We just need to make sure we get complacent after the game from now on. A had ball called in the box led to thier first goal
Second half we had some breakdowns and they scored twice, causing some consternation. We had a tough fight in the second half as Ale house was fired up to win. They showed some good spirited play finding our holes and scoring. With time running low the pressure was put on. We had a goal called back on a questionable offside call. If it was questionable because it was Adrien. If it were Manny or Cosmin, it would have been guaranteed off. Andy was offside but they over looked it and called Adrien.
We sealed the game with a goal late with a few minutes left.

Goals are wildly abundant today. Cosmin was showing off for his Dad and son by scoring 2 goals. James had a goal and an assist. Andy had an assist and Alex had a great day feeding goals with two assists.

One more game to go in the season. I will be talking to Mamma Zu to set up our dinner in the next few weeks after the season. It will be on a Tuesday or Wednesday around 8:30pm. We all have to be there at the same time because they frown on latecomers. We will meet at my house for beers before hand. More details coming.

Capital City Crew 2 Vs Mamma Zu 2 TIE

A beautiful day for playing soccer with the sun shining and temps in the low 70s. Thanks to old Zooer Robert Cataldo and John from Sticky Rice for sticking around to watch the game. Nice to have some of the old guard cheering us on.
We played these guys back in 5th Division. They played us well then as well as today. They had one sub. We had 6 subs. Yet another hard fought tie. We played a great game over all as we have in every game this season. We scored first with Justin making a great pass to Cosmin and Cosmin, who had the best game as a Zooer put it home. He played like an animal. Maybe it is because he was showing off for his son. Bring him to all the games. Crew came back shortly after on a broken play and scored. Half time.
We were happy with the play, but determined to win this one. We had the wind and the sun in their goalie's eyes this half. Their goalie was not the normal goalie for them. But he made some fantastic saves. We had many chances to put this game away with him foiling our efforts. They shot one from the 20 mark and man that one had some zip that beat Jay just past his left hand. Rocket. We were on our heels but came back with a solid effort by Andy to force an error and Adrien was there for the picking. Sweet move to get by the goalie and it was back of the net. Sweetness. I hope we are able to win a game this season, we have been playing to win and it has just not gone our way. We will take the point though.
Shout out rewards go to Les, who had the most grass stains on his jersey. Who ever was wearing #9 had a feather on his jersey. I don't remember anyone running into a bird on the field. Ryan takes the Shout out award this week with the most stain stick used. Honorable mentions go to me ()() and Daniel who had some blood on his, 8 looked like he had tomato sauce on his and 15 had some good dirt on the shoulder.

Next up Richmond Blaze. Lets win it.

Lion's United 2 vs Mamma Zu 2 Tie

Early morning games are sometimes tough on the younger guys. They tend to stay up late "studying" for exams on Saturday night. We missed out on the young guys today and could have used some fresh legs. We only had 11 the whole game. Ironman style.
Starting a game at 9 near the trees, our field was wet from the dew. Sun was low and in the eyes of the goalie. My brilliance of choosing the dry side and the side where the opposing goalie would have the sun in his eyes did not bode well for us as I would have liked. The Lions scored first. They had numbers this time., 7 subs to our no subs. It made up for the last meeting when we drubbed them and they only had 10.
We answered with another goal immediately after. Manny headed a ball crossed to him and then right before the goalie was going to grab it, Adrien heads it just past his reach for the equalizer. There was much rejoicing. And calls to get another one. Only it was the Lions turn again. After a questionable start where the ref was addressing our defense, they capitalized on the confusion with some fancy passing, and put it away. We tried to score again. Alex had some wonderful shots on frame. Only 3 of them hit the post. Bad luck. We got a hand ball in their box and PK hammered the goal home with a crafty fake to the left and got the goalie to bite, then hit it right for the back of the net to gather.
2-2 tie, hard fought by both teams.
Other than Michael Archer getting kicked while he was on the ground and the one guy retaliating for some puishing and shoving, it was a clean match with good reffing. We even hit the ref with a soccer ball during warm ups and it didn't cost us.
Manny not only got an assist, but a bee sting as well. I hope he is OK, He said that Koreans were impervious to that stuff.
Lets hope we win one here soon. We have been playing very well but have to start scoring some more goals.
I was washing the jerseys after the game
Next game 1:00 PM Mamma Zû FC vs. Capital City Crew Bryan Park. Man we are playing more games there this year woot!
PS.
I am instituting a new recognition. I was doing the laundry as our captain's duties dictate. I have always noticed that MVP players on the field in goal results. I also want to institute the "shout" award. The double entandre of "giving a shout out" and the stain remover "shout" will be given each week. I win this week with the most engrained mud and grass stains on the jersey. It was from that retaliation tackle from behind that guy gave me. However in the spirit of hard play and sacrifice, there were two runners up. THe jersey numbers were 16 and 17 with equal dirt and crud. I suspect it was none other than my two cohorts in the defense Ryan and Michael Archer, who played stellar D and it showed in the amount of stain remover i used. Maybe at the banquet we will give a spent bottle of Shout to the winner.

3 game catchup post.

Capital Ale 2- Mamma Zu 1
Ukrops Park, grass field.

I barely remember this game, it was so long ago (like 2 weeks). I remember that the other team was good, that every time the ball went off the field it went down a massive hill, and that we lost. I also remember Manny looking forlorn afterwards, and Karl complaining about his back being hurt. No idea who scored, or how. Oh well, perhaps best forgotten. Injury notes: Karl (back), Yonni (hammy, I think), Carlos (cannot remember)

Mamma Zu 5- Galazy FU II 2
Dorey Park, Field 5

Now here’s a game for the memory banks. First half, up a man, we dominated play and took a 3-1 lead after falling down 1-0 about 10 minutes in. Our scoring started out on a fast break play when Manny got the ball in the middle of the field and made a nice angle pass out to Fawaz, who drilled a low burner past the keeper from about 25-30 yards out. Cosmin, unhappily wearing #7, scored 2 in the first half. One was a sweet curling shot over the keeper on a 3-on-1 break, which was followed immediately by Manny telling him “Good thing you scored, or I’d have killed you. I was wide open.” [This will be important later.]

In the second half, they scored relatively early to get it back to 3-2 on a slow motion goal by Jake from our summer team last year. Then we struck back quickly with a goal from PK (after a halftime shoe change—wear the Adidas from now on!) on a nice pass from Cosmin. Glad he made the drive back for that one. Finally, the drama began again a few minutes later when Chris (I think) got taken down in the box and we were awarded a Penalty Kick. Manny lobbied hard to take the kick, and buried it in the upper 90. Sadly, Cosmin entered the area before the kick, and the goal was taken off the boards (Manny, that’s what you get for sassing Cosmin)… Cosmin, either out of spite or because he felt bad about that goal, then made a sweet run from midfield to score about 5 minutes later, completing his hat trick. #7 was good luck for Cos.
Also, thanks to Alex for coming out and playing keeper for us, and to Matt Grove, for coming out to cheer us on despite his own injure-reserve status. Injury notes: Chris (ankle).

First victory of the regular season. 5-2 Zu. Woohoo!

Lightning 5- Mamma Zu 1
Dorey Park Field 3

Lightning have an appropriate team name, I think… the guy I was guarding was both faster than me and more skilled. Not a good combo! We held our own for the first 10 minutes or so before yielding a goal on a nice give and go run/finish play by them. Immediately, however, Cosmin (back to his old number, much to his chagrin) struck back with a sneaky little toe poke behind the defense and keeper to tie the game and give us a strong sense of positive momentum. Sadly, that momentum was short-lived as we gave up 2 quick goals, and 3 more total in the half. One was a nice free kick that got through Joao’s parry attempt, and another was on a jump ball that Joao got out-jumped on, and nobody else could stop it… Also of note, one of their guys got a yellow card for an unnecessary takedown from behind on Cos. And I think he was the same guy who took me down on a header attempt with a couple of elbows in the back. Fun stuff.

The second half we played better, but still ended up giving up a goal and not scoring. I have already blocked out whatever memory I had of that goal. I do remember Brien with a couple of miracle stops after odd mis-plays where he got caught up between men on run-outs… and myself getting crushed again on another header—maybe that’s why I forgot the goal. We also had a near-goal from Fawaz on another blazing low shot that their keeper just managed to get in front of. Also, Alex played, back in his customary forward position, which was a welcome return for us. Injury notes: Carlos (?, left mid-second half), Chris (out-ankle).

Let's get a good turnout tonight, and beat Rogues!

Wednesday Night Special, Copa Bruce style. Mama Zu 6 - 0 River Plate

After 5 attempts, 6 months of waiting, AND an uncalled for delay due to lack of referees, Mama Zu finally got the 2009 (!) Cup season under way last Wednesday night under the lights at Dorey. And what a start to the Cup it was!

The game started a little slowly on the scoreboard, but not on the field. The Zu was flying around, passing the ball cleanly and crisply through the majority of the first half. The first goal came about 15 minutes in, with a strike from Chris off a pass from Cosmin or Adrian (I think—I missed this one from the bench due to the massive crowd of River Plate subs being in our sightline). Scoring continued about 8 minutes later on a corner kick/hustle goal—corner by Greg, hustle by Brien to knock the ball free from the keeper, goal by Tomasso, cleaning up the mess in the middle. Meanwhile, in the Zu goal, Joao was slapping himself to try and stay awake.

River Plate did have one nice, if odd, opportunity in the first half, also off a corner kick. Somehow Joao stopped a shot after it hit the crossbar, and then the ball lay spinning on the ground, right in front of the goal, yet miraculously surrounded by the Zu defense. Strange but effective D there…

Sadly, I cannot remember the 3rd or 4th goals of the first half (they all start to run together after a week), except that Carlos scored one of them. Halftime, 4-0 Zu.

The second half was, largely, more of the same. We were challenged a bit more on D, probably due to both our letting up a little and their determination not to be shut out… but we managed to keep a clean sheet. The closest calls on D came on a couple of plays when Joao had to come out and do his patented slide kick to clear loose balls, and one where he had to do the same on a rebound right in front.

On offense, meanwhile, Carlos again asserted himself with a goal, this time about 30 seconds after coming into the game for Adrian—great substitution there. The final goal also eludes me, but I suspect it came from Fawaz, who had the defense and the refs wheezing all game. My favorite comment came from the sideline ref who asked Delano to tell Fawaz to stop running so much and so fast. Oh, to be 21 and in shape again…

On to Sunday’s game on the carpet at Ukrop Park. Go Zu!

Scrimmage between Edo Squid and Mamma Zu

Our game was rained out today and I got a text from Gabor from Edo's saying, "lets play!!!!!"
Quick text and email to the crew and we were able to play out there at Doug Wilder MS. Thanks for making this job easy by responding if you could not make it and being able to make a good showing with 9. It was a good game, even though we were missing some key defense. We got a jump on them with a 2-0 lead. beautiful shots by Cosmin. We scored 2 more goals by others and I will add them if they tell me in an email. They scored 3 on us to take it to half. We equalized in the second half but they came on strong with a decimated back line. Good scrimmage all around as it was great to get our foot on the ball.

Game recap, 3/21/2010, Zu 2-Richmond Blaze 2

In an effort to keep this page a little more active, I am going to try to do a quick recap of every game. Couple of things to keep in mind-- I play in the back, and often don't see all the plays up front, or who is making which passes. Since I missed last week, and the stupid Cup game was postponed (again), we're starting with Zu-Blaze...

The Zoosters started out a little slow, with Karl looking at me as the game was starting and saying "my timing is just a little off today"-- this would be a harbinger of things to come. We had our chances early in the first half, with a few shots going wide, Yonni's near miss on the corner kick, and some slip-ups in center of the field leading to a couple of early fast-break opportunities for the Blaze. But we held strong until a corner kick about 20 minutes into the half, where an unmanned back post and slow clearance led to a cheapie goal for the bad guys.

Rather than come back strong right away, the Zu gave up another goal in short order, this one off a long ball, header slightly mistimed by Greg, and Karl and I unable to recover in time. Joao came out to make the play, but we'd left him too much to do, and he couldn't stop the breakaway goal.

This time, the Zu responded. About 10 minutes later, we saw a nice pass from Adrian lead to a half-bicycle goal from Cosmin. (Heard at halftime: "well, he was called offsides a lot, but that goal makes up for it, i think.") Anyway, nicely played from the two of them there...

Halftime score 1-2.

Second half was much better-played by the Zu, at least from my perspective. We were much better-spaced, and gave up few real opportunities other than 2 near-misses on Corner kicks. Manny made a (rare) great defensive stop on one play, too. Joao did an excellent job, despite threatening to quit mid-game (sorry about that one, Joao-- i was tired, and had my man :)). Up front, we had a bunch of good runs lead to close calls, and finally got a goal midway through the half on a breakaway started by Tomasso from near midfield. Nice ball down the middle to Fawaz, who beat his man in a straight race to the ball and put it solidly by the keeper.

Not a ton of note after the evener, except a few more offsides calls and Joao deciding he would stay with the team, at least for now (I promise to try to listen better... and we need you).

The line of the day came from the Blaze left Fullback, who, upon my hitting a shot about 10 yards left of the goal, cracked: "I guess that's why we're defenders." True Enough.

Final Score 2-2.

We probably should have won the game, but played well, particularly in the second half. A good warm-up for the season, and Rogues next week.
